What happens to transcription upon oxidative damage

In this study, the authors used time-resolved nascent transcriptomics to uncover a dynamic interplay between transcriptional regulation and DNA repair following oxidative damage.

Unlike other stress responses, oxidative stress leads to a rapid, transient RNAPII arrest where RNAPII within the gene body stops dead in its tracks and then restarts without disengaging from the DNA template once the damage is repaired. Surprisingly, the researchers also discovered that arrest of RNAPII complexes early in the gene body is controlled through PARylation in a manner unrelated to DNA repair.

This provides the first report of a spatially and temporally resolved dynamic transcriptional response to oxidative stress. Read more here:
