How Cells Sense Ribosome Stress: New Study in Molecular Cell
In the study the authors tackled a long-standing question in translation surveillance: how ZAKα senses stress-induced stalled and collided ribosomes to activate the ribotoxic stress response.
This study provides a molecular explanation for how ZAKα senses stalled and collided ribosomes. By engaging the mRNA exit channel of translating ribosomes, ZAKα can detect loss of ribosome processivity and mRNA stasis, leading to kinase activation and downstream ribotoxic stress signaling.
