Congratulations to Catarina Pechincha and Sofia Ramalho

Catarina Pechincha and Sofia Ramalho are awarded EMBO Fellowships to study mRNA translation

mRNA translation plays a central role in how cell respond to stress. But how is is this response coordinated and what impact does it have during disease development?

Two postdoctoral researchers in the Simon Bekker-Jensen lab, Catarina Pechincha and Sofia Ramalho, are trying to answer these questions, having each received EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships for the projects 'RiboPatrol – Decoding the Interplay of Translation Surveillance Pathways in Mammalian Cells’ and ‘Understanding the role of ribosome collision detection in the intestine’, respectively.

Catarina’s research will focus on how the newly identified protein RNF10 recognizes collided ribosomes and how ribosome stress-surveillance pathways cross-talk to engage a cellular response to stress.

Sofia will explore the role of ribosome collision detection in intestinal physiology, studying how the loss of collision-sensing proteins affects intestinal homeostasis and inflammation-associated disease.
